In a move that screams “half in, half out,” President Donald Trump’s latest budget proposal keeps federal protections in place for state medical marijuana programs—while still blocking Washington, D.C. from launching legal recreational sales.
The proposal would continue the long-standing federal rider that prevents the Department of Justice from interfering with state-legal medical cannabis programs, giving patients and businesses some level of security.
But at the same time? D.C. stays handcuffed.
Despite local support and years of pushing for a regulated adult-use market, Congress—backed by Trump’s proposal—would keep the ban in place, blocking the city from using its own funds to set up recreational sales.
So what’s the message here?
Medical marijuana is “okay” if states handle it… but full legalization—especially in the nation’s capital—is still a no-go.
It’s the same split-brain cannabis policy we’ve seen for years:
Bottom line: The federal government is still treating cannabis like it can’t decide what decade it’s in.
