Running a retail register can be a grind, but three smoke shop employees in Danbury recently found out that the job gets considerably more complicated when your customers happen to carry federal badges. It turns out that when undercover Drug Enforcement Administration agents and local police walk through the front door for a surprise compliance check, they are rarely in the market for a decorative lighter. Instead, investigators found an unadvertised daily special running across town, watching clerks hand over unlicensed cannabis to undercover agents alongside tobacco vapes to underage buyers, effectively scoring a two-for-one violation in a single transaction.
The multi-agency sweep swept through three storefronts along Mill Ridge Road, Mill Plain Road, and White Street, uncovering a stash that stretched far beyond casual side-hustle territory. By the time officers finished tallying up their confiscations at Star Rose Vape & Smoke Shop, Smoke House 2, and Smoke Station, the haul of bootleg THC products topped fifty pounds, led by a single location harboring nearly thirty pounds of off-the-books stock. Rather than closing out the register and heading into the weekend, all three cashiers ended their shifts in police custody, leaving local shop owners with a glaring reminder that while the cannabis retail landscape is rapidly evolving, skipping the licensing board and serving the badge-and-minor demographic is still a surefire way to watch your business go up in smoke.
