The WNBA has officially removed marijuana from its list of banned substances under its new collective bargaining agreement, marking a major shift in the league’s approach to cannabis. At the same time, the league added several psychedelics—including psilocybin, DMT, and ibogaine—to its prohibited substances list for the first time.
The new policy brings the WNBA more in line with other major sports organizations that have relaxed cannabis restrictions in recent years. Cannabis is no longer subject to routine prohibition, though players can still face testing and discipline in certain circumstances involving impairment, treatment programs, or dependency issues.
The agreement also allows players to hold passive ownership stakes in cannabis companies and endorse certain CBD products under specific guidelines.
While marijuana is coming off the banned list, the inclusion of psychedelics signals that the next debate in professional sports may be less about cannabis and more about emerging substances being explored for wellness, recovery, and mental health.
