Wow! That’s a lot of weed.
Germany Imported Over 218 Tons of Legal Cannabis in One Year reports that Germany brought in more than 218 tons of medical cannabis over a 12-month stretch, cementing its place as Europe’s heavyweight champion of legal weed.
Germany’s medical cannabis market has been exploding since pharmacies first began legally dispensing cannabis back in 2017. Now the country is importing more cannabis than the rest of Europe can practically smell from across the border. In just the first quarter of 2026 alone, Germany imported over 50 tons of medical cannabis. That’s not typo-level stoner math either — it’s official data from Germany’s Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices.
For perspective, the United Kingdom — Europe’s second-largest medical cannabis market — imported roughly 30 tons during 2025. Germany basically smoked past that number and kept going without even coughing.
A big chunk of the supply is still coming from countries like Canada and Portugal, although Germany’s own domestic cultivation industry is ramping up fast after the country loosened production limits under the CanG law.
But here’s where things get interesting: Germany’s cannabis scene is evolving beyond simple imports. Since 2024, adults have been allowed to grow up to three plants at home, and cannabis social clubs have started spreading across the country. That means some patients and consumers are skipping pharmacy imports altogether and growing their own stash or sourcing it through nonprofit clubs instead.
Even with all those changes, demand keeps climbing. Germany has quietly become the engine driving Europe’s legal cannabis economy, and every new import record makes it clearer that the rest of the continent is still trying to catch up.
