Via comicbookresources.com: Metropolis has Superman, Gotham City has Batman, and now Ohio has a superhero of its very own. However, some critics it were somebody else — anybody else.
Meet Buddie, the caped crusader enlisted by ResponsibleOhio to aid in the fight to legalize marijuana in the Buckeye State. You’ll recognize him by his green-and-white costume, marijuana leaf-like gloves, washboard abs, half-closed eyes and blinding smile. Oh, and bythe enormous marijuana bud that serves as his head.
He’s touring college campuses in an effort to drum up support in the upcoming election for ballot Issue 3, which would legalize pot. And some people don’t like it one bit, with Buddie already drawing comparisons to R.J. Reynolds’ extinct mascot Joe Camel.
Nick Lashutka, president of the Ohio Children’s Hospital Association, told Cleveland.com that by choosing a superhero character, ResponsibleOhio appears to be marketing to children. A spokeswoman for the opposition campaign Ohioans Against Marijuana Monopolies told theDayton Daily News that the use of Buddie “demonstrates a troubling lack of good judgment.”
But ResponsibleOhio asserts Buddie will only visit campuses to promote a social media campaign targeting people 21 and older. Yet even a spokeswoman for the pro-marijuana group Ohio Families CANN questioned the wisdom of employing a superhero for the effort.
Buddie, meanwhile, only nodded his enormous head and smiled …
