Pass me one of those Cannabis Beers
How many people would consider themselves beer drinkers? It’s not a bad thing to want to throw a couple back, watch a game or have a picnic. Alcohol is well intertwined into human society all over the world. Not many people are aware that hops, the main ingredient in beer, is a close genus cousin to cannabis. That’s right, you read it correctly. Cannabis and hops aka Humulus lupulus are classified as cannabaceae plants. Did you know, a few of the primary aroma terpenes in hops are myrcene, beta-pinene and alpha-humulene? These similar aromatic compounds are also what give cannabis plants their characteristic smell. Crazy right?
So what would you say to a cannabis infused beer if you were offered one?
Keith Villa, the inventor of Blue Moon beer, is launching three marijuana-infused drinks that promise intoxication without the alcoholic headache.
The drinks, served chilled and initially only available in Colorado this fall, will contain no alcohol but will instead be infused with special marijuana formulas designed to mimic the effects of booze. Its developers say the drink will “hit” the user at the same pace as if they were drinking a beer. Would you be interest now? Replace the alcohol with THC.
Other companies are trying a different approach as well. They offer cannabis beer, but they all lack the psychoactive compound, THC. Instead, they’re infused with hemp extract (low to 0% THC) to give them a marijuana taste — and helps them grab headlines. Federal law prohibits brewers from using marijuana in their beers.
In the summer of 2017, Lagunitas, the craft beer exemplar, partnered with CannaCraft, a California-based cannabis oil producer, and introduced a limited edition of “Supercritical,” an ale brewed with terpenes (but no THC or CBD) extracted from two popular cannabis varietals, Girl Scout Cookie and Blue Dream.

Can I buy THC-infused beer? Unfortunately, the answer is no. You can’t buy true, alcoholic THC-infused cannabis beer at this time. North American governments are still on the fence about the combination of cannabis and booze. Hopefully as time progresses and people become more educated, we can see more advancements in product differentiation.
