Comedian and former Saturday Night Live cast member Pete Davidson recently opened up about his struggles with drug addiction, revealing how marijuana use affected both his mental health and personal life. Speaking on Power 105.1 FM’s The Breakfast Club on August 13, Davidson described his daily marijuana use during his twenties and the unforeseen consequences it brought.
Davidson shared that his cannabis consumption eventually led to psychosis, causing him to hear voices and experience a disorienting sense of detachment. “Weed isn’t supposed to do that … it’s because it’s too strong,” he explained.
The comedian attributed much of his substance struggles to the pressures of sudden fame after joining SNL. “Yeah, I was just doing drugs and trying to do comedy,” Davidson admitted. He acknowledged that therapy and rehab were ineffective while he was actively using substances, bluntly describing himself as “a big drug addict.”
Davidson credited his eventual decision to quit drugs to the impact it had on his relationships. “I’m not a person who can do things in moderation, unfortunately,” he said. “It just got to a point where people I really cared about were like, I will not f— with you anymore.” He noted that while some relationships were strained, many were eventually restored.
Reflecting on his tumultuous twenties, Davidson expressed both gratitude and perspective. “I’m glad all the bad, crazy stuff happened in my 20s,” he said. “It’s tough when you’re young and doing that, but I’m grateful I got it out of the way.” He also contrasted his experience with those who achieve fame later in life, noting the advantage of having a more established sense of self and support system.
Today, Davidson is in a much different place personally. He and his girlfriend, Elsie Hewitt, are expecting their first child, marking a new chapter in his life beyond the challenges of his past.
