So, you want to quit smoking cigarettes, but the idea of slapping on a sad nicotine patch or chewing chalky gum just doesn’t quite do it for you. Congratulations, you are apparently part of a massive demographic that has decided the absolute best way to stop inhaling one type of smoke is to aggressively inhale another. A glorious new study dropped by folks at the VA and various universities reveals that people are essentially ditching traditional smoking cessation aids and using marijuana instead. Yes, you read that correctly. Nearly nine percent of adults trying to kick their cigarette habit are turning to sweet Mary Jane to get the job done, which basically rivals the number of people actually using doctor-prescribed medications. And if you are trying to quit vaping, reaching for a THC product is incredibly the third most popular strategy, comfortably beating out therapy and over-the-counter nicotine replacements. Because why go to behavioral counseling when you can just melt into your couch and forget what a vape even is?
Of course, the researchers felt absolutely obligated to point out the little hiccup in this master plan. It turns out that fighting a nicotine addiction with THC might not be a flawless medical triumph. Shocking, I know. The study noted that the pioneers substituting tobacco with weed reported significantly worse withdrawal symptoms, including feeling irritated, sleeping poorly, losing focus, and constantly thinking about food. Who could have possibly predicted that consuming a substance famous for causing the munchies and making you zone out would lead to increased hunger and a lack of concentration? It is truly a medical mystery. But despite these completely unforeseeable side effects, the trend is undeniable. Recent polls keep showing that cigarettes are out and cannabis is very much in. At this point, we are just trading our sad little tobacco sticks for something that makes us crave a family-sized bag of Doritos at 2 AM, but hey, at least we are finally taking our health seriously.
