In New Haven this week, a local tobacco shop’s pivot from cigarettes to baseball cards came with a surprising twist — one that landed its owner in legal hot water.
Police say officers recently raided High Bros, a shop that had rebranded itself as a sports memorabilia and collectibles store. But during the investigation, detectives uncovered evidence suggesting the business was still engaged in selling controlled substances, including roughly half a pound of marijuana, according to law enforcement.
Officials allege that despite the store’s outward transformation, unlawful activity persisted behind the counter. Instead of just trading smokes for jerseys and trading cards, authorities say the operation involved illicit drug distribution — an accusation that has now prompted charges and a formal police response.
The bust has prompted local discussions about compliance and enforcement in neighborhood retail spaces, as well as what it takes to successfully transition a business away from tobacco and other regulated products. Law enforcement officials did not immediately release the full list of charges, but say the case remains under active investigation.
