For all the talk about fast-tracking marijuana reform, the reality looks a lot slower.
The Drug Enforcement Administration just confirmed that the federal marijuana rescheduling process is still stuck in limbo—despite an executive order from Donald Trump telling officials to move “as quickly as possible.”
At the center of the delay? An ongoing legal appeal that hasn’t been resolved. Until that gets sorted out, the entire process to move cannabis from Schedule I to Schedule III is effectively frozen in place.
In other words, the executive order didn’t actually change anything overnight—it just told agencies to hurry up within a system that’s already bogged down in legal and procedural hurdles.
And that system isn’t moving fast.
Even months after the order, federal officials are still filing updates saying the process is “pending,” highlighting just how complicated—and fragile—the path to rescheduling really is.
Washington can promise speed all it wants, but when it comes to cannabis reform, the bureaucracy is still calling the shots.
