A Republican member of Congress says cannabis policy is not a main focus for the U.S. Justice Department right now. The comment came in a newsletter report by Marijuana Moment.
Rep. Dave Joyce said he is not sure if changing marijuana rules is a priority for the department. He explained that officials appear busy with other major issues and responsibilities.
The update comes during an uncertain time for federal cannabis policy. Marijuana is still illegal under federal law. But leaders have talked about moving it to a lower drug schedule to recognize medical use and allow more research.
In 2025, the administration ordered steps to speed up the review process and support more medical research on cannabis and CBD.
Even if the drug is moved to a lower schedule, it would not become legal nationwide, and criminal penalties would still apply in many cases.
Experts note that federal drug policy has focused more on issues like trafficking, border security, and addiction treatment, which has left cannabis reform moving slowly.
For now, the congressman’s remarks highlight a simple reality: federal cannabis policy remains unsettled, and major changes may not come quickly.
