We’ve all been there: you walk into a dispensary, lock eyes with a slick, holographic bag promising 38% THC, and hand over your hard-earned cash. You get home, take a hit, and… it tastes like lawn clippings and gives you a headache.
What went wrong? You bought the marketing, not the material.
If you want to stop gambling on your stash, you need to learn how to read a Certificate of Analysis (COA). A COA is the official lab report that reveals exactly what’s inside a given batch of weed or concentrate. It tells you what cannabinoids are present, which terpenes drive the flavor, and—most importantly—whether you’re inhaling mold, heavy metals, or residual butane.
Here is your step-by-step guide to reading a COA like a seasoned industry insider.
1. Verify the Lab Credentials First
Before looking at cannabinoid percentages, check the top header. A COA is only as good as the facility that produced it.
- ISO Accreditation: Look for an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited third-party testing facility. If the lab isn’t accredited, the results aren’t reliable.
- Batch & Lot Numbers: Make sure the batch number on the report matches the number stamped on your product packaging.
- The Harvest/Test Date: Cannabis degrades. THC converts into CBN over time, and terpenes evaporate. If you’re buying flower tested eight months ago, expect a harsher smoke and a sleepier effect.
2. Decode the Potency Profile (Don’t Get Fooled by “Total THC”)
Most consumers jump straight to the THC percentage, but raw plant material doesn’t contain high amounts of active Delta-9 THC. It contains THCA (Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid), which only converts into intoxicating Delta-9 THC when heated.
Because chemical mass is lost during heating, calculating true Total THC requires math:
Total THC = (THCA X 0.877) + Delta 9 THC
If a brand advertises “35% THC” on the bag, check the breakdown. If they simply added THCA and Delta-9 together without applying the 0.877 multiplier, they inflated the number to sell product.
3. Check the Terpene Profile for Real Flavor & Effects
Terpenes dictate whether a strain makes you feel energized, relaxed, or ready for bed. They also give cannabis its unique aroma and taste.
- Target Percentages: Quality flower generally sits between 1.5% and 3.5% total terpenes. Concentrates (like live rosin or live resin) should easily hit 4% to 8%+.
- Dominant Terpenes: Look at the top three terpenes listed.
- Myrcene: Earthy, herbal; associated with deep relaxation (“couch-lock”).
- Limonene: Citrusy, bright; often associated with elevated mood.
- Caryophyllene: Peppery, spicy; excellent for stress relief and physical inflammation.
If a strain claims to be a pungent, gassy strain but shows under 0.5% total terpenes, it will likely burn harsh and taste stale.
4. Audit Safety & Contaminant Screenings
This is the most critical section of any COA. Every single category should explicitly display a PASS status.
- Microbials (Mold & Yeast): Look for Total Yeast & Mold (TYMC) and specific pathogens like E. coli, Salmonella, and Aspergillus. Results should read ND (Not Detected).
- Heavy Metals: Cannabis is a bioaccumulator—it pulls toxins, arsenic, and lead directly out of the soil. Check for Lead (Pb), Arsenic (As), Cadmium (Cd), and Mercury (Hg).
- Residual Solvents (Extracts & Vapes Only): If you’re dabbing or vaping, check this section to ensure chemicals like butane, propane, or ethanol used during extraction were purged down to safe levels.

A dispensary’s job is to sell product, but your job is to consume safely. The next time you shop, ask your budtender for the COA—either via QR code on the packaging or directly from their database. A reputable brand will always show their test results proudly.
