The core issue is D.C.’s lack of statehood. Unlike in true-blue states where federal prosecutors generally ignore local cannabis laws, D.C. residents remain at the mercy of whoever occupies the U.S. Attorney’s seat. Martin, a culture warrior with ties to Jan. 6 defendants and Kremlin-aligned media, has seized that power — not to prosecute actual criminals, but to score ideological points.
And he’s not just going after cannabis. He’s gone after Wikipedia. Demoted prosecutors who worked on Capitol riot cases. Defended extremists. The cannabis crackdown isn’t isolated; it’s another front in a broader effort to flex federal muscle over a city that can’t fully govern itself.
This situation is more than a skirmish over zoning — it’s a stress test for home rule and a warning shot to every dispensary, landlord, and customer in D.C. In the absence of statehood, D.C. is vulnerable to political whims. And Ed Martin, for now, holds the whip.
