NEW HAVEN — A cannabis retailer planning to open on a relatively isolated, industrially zoned stretch of East Street will be able to do so despite the fact that part of its building — including the foundation and where the electrical panels will be — are below the base flood elevation.
The City Plan Commission unanimously approved a flood damage prevention ordinance variance for the owner of the building, Foundry Square, LLC., Wednesday night.
The owner of the business planning to open in the Foundry Square complex is Acreage Connecticut Retail JV, LLC.
As a condition of the approval, Foundry Square LLC will be required to “dry-proof” the room in which the electrical panels will be located, city officials said.
Acreage Connecticut Retail JV, LLC was unanimously approved Sept. 20, 2023 to be the city’s fifth and possibly final approved cannabis retailer. The way the city’s enabling ordinance reads, five cannabis establishments is the limit, officials have said.
The company is owned by Kebra Smith-Bolden, a registered nurse for 20 years. During an earlier presentation she said in 2017 she formed what at the time was among the first legal cannabis businesses owned by a person of color. The applicant was represented by attorney Benjamin Trachten.
