ORANGE — A cannabis dispensary that moved from Milford has opened on Boston Post Road, leaving Milford without a licensed cannabis retailer and filling Orange’s sole slot for a permitted cannabis retailer.
Southern CT Wellness & Healing, the dispensary previously located in Milford, was acquired by Chicago-based Green Thumb Industries in December 2020, according to a company spokesperson. In the dispensary’s move, it was rebranded as RISE. The store at 175 Boston Post Road, a former TD Bank branch, opened Monday.
As a medical-use cannabis dispensary, RISE offers high- and low-potency THC and CBD products through in-store shopping, curbside pickup and delivery on Wednesdays and Fridays, according to its website.
Orange Planning and Zoning Administrator Jack Demirjian said the town allows its one retailer to sell medical-use and recreational-use cannabis. Demirjian said the town has not expressed interest in having more than one permitted cannabis retailer.
RISE has locations in 14 states, two of which are in Connecticut: a hybrid facility in Branford and the medical dispensary that just opened in Orange, according to its website.
Milford does not allow recreational-use dispensaries, but it has permitted two medical cannabis dispensaries since Connecticut legalized marijuana, according to Joseph Griffith, director of Permitting and Land Use.
They were Curaleaf, which moved to Manchester in July and converted its license to a hybrid retail license, and Southern CT Wellness & Healing, according to Kaitlyn Krasselt, communications director for the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection.
