The Cannabis Control Commission has approved the state’s first cannabis research facility.
The agency gave the green light to Curaleaf Processing, Inc., an affiliate of Curaleaf Holdings, Inc (OTCMKTS: CURLF) at a Nov. 14 meeting. The facility would be located at 241 Riverview Ave. in Newton.
Curaleaf must still submit a research permit application, laying out specific research plans, and submit to an additional inspection before it can open. A targeted opening date has not been released.
The research license type was established in 2018 as a way to take advantage of the state’s research and R&D community. Seven applications for the license type have been submitted to the CCC since 2018, according to the commission, but this is the first to gain approval.
The new license was approved following a year when many other types of cannabis licenses were surrendered in Massachusetts.
According to the commission, the approval of this license would make the facility one of only 15 similar research establishments approved in the country. Ten of the facilities are currently operating. Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, Washington and Colorado are the only states with a provision for marijuana research facility licenses.
Commissioners approved the license unanimously. Commissioner Ava Callender Concepcion, who has been out on medical leave, joined the meeting virtually.
