In a move aimed at tightening cannabis regulations, Rhode Island State Representative Scott A. Slater (D-Providence) has introduced House Bill 6270, seeking to prohibit the sale of hemp-derived delta-9 THC-infused beverages unless they are authorized and regulated under the state’s cannabis laws.
The proposed legislation aims to ensure that all THC-infused consumables, regardless of their source, are subject to consistent regulatory standards. Currently, hemp-derived products fall under the purview of the Department of Business Regulation (DBR), while cannabis-derived products are overseen by the Cannabis Control Commission. Slater’s bill aligns with a provision in Governor Dan McKee’s budget that proposes transferring regulatory authority over hemp-derived cannabinoids to the Cannabis Control Commission, promoting a unified regulatory framework.
House Bill 6270 was introduced on April 25, 2025, and has been referred to the House Corporations Committee for consideration.
