Terpenes are defined as being: a large and diverse class of organic compounds, produced by a variety of plants, though also by some insects, which emit terpenes from their osmeteria. They are often strong-smelling. They may protect the plants that produce them by deterring herbivores and by attracting predators and parasites of herbivores. In layman’s terms; the oils on plants that make them smell and taste a certain way!
Now that new and experienced users alike are informed lets talk about something new! Most concentrates I’ve come across from the dispensary don’t taste like the strain that they come from, and for the longest time I wondered why that was. Through my research I’ve come to the conclusion that a lot of the natural terps are lost from the reaction when the solvent is introduced to the extraction process.
I’ve discovered recently that chemists have come up with a way to extract pure terpenes. Now with these terpenes you can flavor your extract any which way you’d like and you can change the viscosity of your concentrate without the use of chemicals such as Propylene Glycol (PG), Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) and or Vegetable Glycerin (VG or G).
It is insane to me how they have isolated the flavor of certain strains such as sour diesel or ak-47 or the pungent taste of citrus or lemonade or even chocolate!?! The advancements in the field of cannabis are more astonishing each and every day. As a matter of fact, at the last meltdown; El Jeffe, Cannapete, Uncle Lou and myself all got to try Sprite flavored concentrates….(let that settle in)…..it was surely next level!
