You’d think in this day and age, with cannabis slowly shedding its taboo, Connecticut would chill out a bit. But nope, here we go again – the state’s Attorney General, William Tong, has his undies in a twist over HighBazaar’s alleged unlicensed cannabis market. The man’s out here firing cease and desist letters left and right like it’s a game of legal whack-a-mole.
Let’s be real here. Connecticut legalized cannabis for folks over 21 to puff and pass without hassle. But now, Tong’s waving his Legal Saber, citing statutes left, right, and center, threatening these independent events.
HighBazaar, the target of this particular legal missile, isn’t in the state’s “approved” list for selling weed. And boy, does that ruffle some feathers! Because in Connecticut, if you’re not in with the bigwigs, you’re out. You can possess it, sure, but selling it outside the regulated market? That’s a big no-no here.
Let’s not forget, this isn’t the first rodeo for Attorney General Tong. He’s got a knack for stomping on the little guys. He’s flexed his legal muscles against several retailers, dropping judgments like they’re hot, all under the pretext of the Connecticut Unfair Trade Practices Act. Seems like Tong’s mission in life is to make the little fish pay, while the big ones swim free.
As the Attorney General’s office boasts about pending actions and investigations, it’s hard not to see the pattern. The state’s picking fights with small businesses, slapping them with lawsuits and penalties, all while the big corporate players in the regulated market walk away unscathed and not meeting demand.
So, here we are, witnessing another showdown – the state vs. the independents. Tong’s sending his legal hounds, including Assistant Attorneys General Jonathan Blake and Michael Nunes, and Deputy Associate Attorney General Michael Wertheimer, to sniff out these “offenders.”
In the end, it’s the same old story. The state of Connecticut’s yet again stomping on the little guys to clear the path for big corporations. Who knew legalizing weed would lead to such a power play? But hey, as they say, follow the money. And in this case, it’s the bigwigs who’ve got the cash and the clout.
But until the dust settles, the little guys will continue to fight. Because let’s face it, in this cannabis saga, it’s David vs. Goliath, and we all know how that story goes.
