What is a GiftGang? Are they a gang? An organization? A party? Actually it’s none of that or anything you might think it is… It’s simply an idea that turned into a hashtag that many have gotten behind in opposition to the tyranny of CT HB5329.
The tyranny of HB5329?!? Section 2 of this bill, simply put, is a law that doesn’t protect anyone except commercial interest. It’s a proposal to eliminate gifting, gifting gatherings, and the ability of donations/tipping.
The fine has been recently been rewritten to reflect a lesser amount. However this still seems extremely exclusive don’t you think? I thought we made this legal. Okay… It’s legal, but only to an exclusive audience it would appear through this language.
#GiftGang
It’s a revolving door of individuals that find this offensive. In opposition of this proposal they give cannabis away in front of the capital every week. People are literally donating their stuff to give it away to anyone 21 yrs or older all day long.
But what makes this even more interesting is that idea has even evolved further and is sort of reflecting the past.
In the ’60s there was a group of people called the Diggers. These folks would set up stands and give away free food and pot. They were against commercialism and opened free stores with things like donated clothing among other things.
#GiftGang has been giving food to people who walk by that can really appreciate something as simple as a banana or apple. Plus a joint usually changes the day these people were expecting to have. They’ll be there every Wednesday until the bill is rewritten and voted on or dies.
Some patients rely on gifting in order to survive as dispensary prices are too high for those on a fixed incomes.
I’m just calling it like I see it at this point. These gatherings create communities and a culture that it is hard to recreate with this type of restrictive legal language. I also think this is a foundation for a very much needed caregiver program in this state. And I’m not talking about registering someone to go to the store for you. I’m talking about people that you know that grows stuff just for you. Maybe it’s an exotic and your buddy can keep it alive and reproduce it just for you… Why can’t I give my buddy a couple of bucks for that? They gave it the TLC. I’d give you money for taking care of my dog while I was away… So, when you take a critical look, this law is reactive and complete nonsense only looking to protect corporate gains. Give some thought to all of the things this can impact.
Below is a link to the portal to figure out who your state representative is so you can call them, send them an email, and then call them again to let them know that this bill is only creating criminals to protect corporate dollars and to either remove section 2 of HB5329 or let it die entirely. This isn’t legalization it’s prohibition with extra steps.
See you Wednesday. 👋
