HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — There’s a new popular beverage in town, THC-infused seltzers have been flying off Connecticut shelves, according to liquor store owners.
Connecticut lawmakers have been listening to testimony about possibly lowering the amount of THC in the drinks from five milligrams to 0.5 milligrams. They are targeting gummies.
“I can see all of the avenues here, and I can see where they are confronted with a challenge here trying to get every bit of THC into the adult-used dispensary channel,” said Matt Schulman with the Serene Craft Beer Distributors of Connecticut. “I just don’t think it works for a number of businesses, and for products that aren’t highly intoxicating.”
The drinks are currently being sold online and in liquor stores, but not in dispensaries.
“It’s a replacement for alcohol for a lot of people who want to cut back on the calories and who want to have a just have a nice relaxing time and not be hungover in the morning,” Schulman said.
Liquor store owners said these drinks are so popular that they restock the shelves almost every other day. They said people often buy THC seltzers when they’re looking for a more relaxing drink than alcohol.
“This is maybe a nice balance for low-dose users who are using this as a health option or a very light extremely light intoxicant, for social relaxation,” Schulman said.

This is the hottest, newest beverage on liquor store shelves.
Some have suggested moving the THC seltzers to the cannabis retail side, making them only legal in adult cannabis shops.
“You know, their suggestion that they can just move this into the dispensary channel, but they are qualifying it at that point as marijuana or cannabis that is high-dose, and that comes with that whole string of complications, the manufacturer would have to be an in-state manufacturer for these beverages,” Schulman said.
Lawmakers have not made a decision about the future of the seltzers yet.
