A 22-year-old man from Toronto was arrested at the Niagara Falls border, after U.S. officials say he was smuggling marijuana to the U.S., disguised as waffles.
In a release from the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of New York officials say the man was crossing the Peace Bridge in Niagara Falls, Ont., on July 27.
It says he had a semi-trailer and had customs documents indicating he was taking frozen waffles to Georgia.
The shipper confirmed the waffles were fraudulent and upon inspection border agents found 2,089 of a “green leafy substance consistent with marijuana” and 110 pounds of ketamine, according to the release.
Investigators learned the accused had been behind five prior fraudulent shipments.
The release states the charges carry a mandatory minimum penalty of five years in prison, a maximum of 40 years, and a $5 million fine.
