A new nationwide study suggests that CBD supplements may help mellow out aggressive dogs, giving hope to pet owners whose furry companions act more like tiny rage machines than loyal sidekicks.
Researchers from the Dog Aging Project analyzed data from more than 47,000 dogs collected over several years. Among them, just over seven percent had been given CBD or hemp-based supplements, with most receiving it daily. These dogs tended to be older and more likely to have chronic health issues such as dementia, joint problems, or cancer—conditions that can increase stress and irritability.
Not surprisingly, dogs given CBD started off more aggressive than their non-supplemented counterparts. But over time, researchers observed a steady reduction in aggressive behaviors among the CBD group. Meanwhile, dogs that weren’t given CBD showed no comparable change. In short, CBD didn’t just help dogs chill—it helped the grumpy dogs chill the most.
Interestingly, the study found that CBD’s soothing effect appeared to target aggression specifically. It didn’t significantly reduce other issues often linked to anxiety or discomfort, such as nervous pacing or general edginess. So while CBD might not magically turn your anxious pup into a Zen master, it may help tone down their more confrontational tendencies.
Despite the encouraging results, researchers caution that there’s still a lot we don’t know. Owners reported giving CBD in various forms, doses, and brands, meaning the study couldn’t pinpoint exactly how much CBD works best or which formulations are most effective. And because the data relied on owner reporting, there’s room for human error—especially from those who may already be rooting for CBD to be the miracle cure.
The study also didn’t uncover the biological “why” behind CBD’s impact on aggression, leaving scientists with more questions to explore.
Still, for dog owners seeking a natural supplement to help soften sharp canine attitudes—especially in older, ailing pets—these findings add weight to CBD’s growing reputation as a potential behavioral support tool. Experts, however, continue to recommend chatting with your veterinarian before adding CBD to your dog’s routine and choosing high-quality products when you do.
So while CBD isn’t an instant personality transplant, it may help turn your hot-headed hound into a much gentler companion. Turns out, sometimes the toughest dogs just need a little help taking the edge off.
