COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — It’s been nearly two weeks since recreational marijuana has been legal in Ohio,
Data released by the Ohio Division of Cannabis Control shows that in the first five days, Ohio generated over $11.5 million in recreational sales.
Overall, dispensaries sold 1,285 pounds of marijuana.
Medical marijuana sales generated an additional $8.3 million.
Dispensaries were given the green light to start selling recreational marijuana on Tuesday, Aug. 6.
Recreational marijuana was made legal in November after voters passed Issue 2 by an overwhelming 57% to 42%.
The tax received goes to various destinations in the state:
36% to the Cannabis Social Equity and Jobs Fund: Used for social equity and job initiatives.
36% to the Host Community Cannabis Fund: Benefits municipal corporations or townships with adult use dispensaries.
25% to the Substance Abuse and Addiction Fund: Supports substance abuse and addiction services.
3% to the Division of Cannabis Control and Tax Commissioner Fund: Supports the operations of the Division of Cannabis Control and covers the tax administration costs.
Ohio issues a 10% tax on all adult-use cannabis, which dispensaries must pay each month.
