In a recent development, law enforcement and health officials in Shelby County, Alabama, have issued a warning about a highly potent cannabis product known as “Moon Rocks,” discovered during a Birmingham police drug bust.
“Moon Rocks” are created by combining marijuana flower with hash oil and rolling it in cannabis powder, resulting in THC levels that can reach 50% or higher — significantly more potent than traditional cannabis.
Lt. Shane Plyler, executive director of Compact, emphasized the dangers of this product, stating, “This is not the marijuana from the 1960s or ’70s. You’re talking about the equivalent of smoking 50 joints in one go. The effects can be intense — and dangerous.”
Officials warn that the side effects of these high-THC products can come on quickly and may include hallucinations, severe anxiety, and psychotic episodes — particularly for individuals with underlying mental health conditions such as depression or schizophrenia.
While “Moon Rocks” have not officially appeared in Shelby County, Compact officers report an increase in THC-infused products throughout the region.
This warning comes amid growing concerns about the health implications of high-potency cannabis products. A case study published in Cureus detailed a 20-year-old male with no prior psychiatric history who developed acute psychosis and seizures after using “Moon Rocks” for the first time. The patient experienced hallucinations, aggressive behavior, and multiple seizures, highlighting the potential neurological risks associated with such potent cannabis preparations.
Experts advise individuals to exercise caution with high-THC cannabis products, especially those with a history of mental health issues or neurological conditions. The increasing availability of these potent products underscores the need for public awareness and education on their potential risks.
