The research, conducted by a team of scientists analyzing health records from over 400,000 individuals, found a statistically significant correlation between frequent cannabis consumption and heightened incidence of major heart and brain-related medical emergencies. The risk appeared to be greater among those who used cannabis daily or multiple times a week.
While cannabis is often viewed as a safer alternative to other substances, particularly in light of growing legalization and medical use, the findings underscore potential health risks that are still not fully understood. Researchers emphasized that cannabinoids may influence blood pressure, heart rate, and vascular inflammation—factors known to contribute to cardiovascular disease.
Medical professionals are now urging more comprehensive public health messaging to include these potential risks, especially for individuals with existing heart conditions or those predisposed to cardiovascular disease.
The study’s authors call for further investigation to better understand the mechanisms at play and to guide clinical recommendations as cannabis use becomes more widespread. In the meantime, they advise caution and consultation with healthcare providers, particularly for patients already managing heart or circulatory health issues.
