An independent study from a cannabis consumer advocacy group found some marijuana products sold at New Jersey dispensaries tested positive for mold and other pathogens.
The group Safe Leaf Society found nearly 30% of the products purchased for this study tested positive for microbes above the standard set by the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission (CRC). It also found THC levels did not always meet the levels on the product label.
Safe Leaf said it did not conduct the survey to create controversy. Instead, it wants to work with consumers, industry leaders and regulators to make sure safety and integrity are prioritized.
The organization said mislabeled products are equivalent to a pharmacy providing the wrong prescription or a restaurant selling moldy food.
The CRC said it conducts regular inspections at every dispensary, and it is looking into this matter and will take action wherever regulatory violations are found.
