KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Another cannabis shop makes its way to West Michigan with a new approach: customers can now consume on site.
Only Alien Cannabis Co. in Kalamazoo is one of three locations with the licensing in the state. There’s only a handful across the country.
With the new lounge that opened in February, customers have the luxury to sit back, enjoy each other’s company and puff away.
“It opens up the door for so many fun things activities that we can have in here from karaoke to game nights,” Managing Partner Gabe Barham said. “Stuff that makes it more like an experience.”
The company that sits on KL Avenue claims they are the only one in the country to go from seed through retail to smoke all under one roof.
“This goes a long way to bolster the cannabis tourism industry,” Devin Loker, attorney for Only Alien Cannabis Co. said.
It took years for the company to get the licensing necessary, as well as approval from the City of Kalamazoo.
“They were on the leading edge of allowing that, I think having a campus community in town with having renters that might not be able to use at home made sense for it to belong in this area,” Loker said.
While customers can enjoy their recreational marijuana while watching cars roll by, they too need to think about when its safe to be back behind the wheel.
“We are definitely not going to rush users out of this lounge, if they want to kick back for an hour or two until they feel safe to drive, they are more than welcome,” Barham said.
The establishment has cameras within the lounge to keep a close eye on customers behavior.
“We can watch how much is being consumed, how people are acting, see if there is any obvious signs of impairment,” General Manager Marty Webber said.
“If they feel they need a ride something like that we could call them an Uber, I will drive them if I have to,” Webber said.
According to Loker, there isn’t a standardized “you are too high test,” saying they will do their best to gage customers.
