What began as a reported crash in Woodbridge on Tuesday night quickly turned into a major drug and weapons arrest, according to police.
Officers responded to Baldwin Street around 8:45 p.m. after receiving reports of a motor vehicle accident. When they arrived, they encountered a 20-year-old New Haven man who was allegedly attempting to remove his license plate and leave the scene.
Police say their investigation escalated quickly. A backpack near the vehicle reportedly contained a loaded firearm classified under Connecticut law as an illegal assault weapon, along with a high-capacity magazine. A search of the vehicle allegedly uncovered significant quantities of narcotics, including roughly 1,700 grams of marijuana mixed with fentanyl, approximately 80 grams of cocaine and fentanyl, and materials consistent with drug distribution.
Authorities took the suspect into custody without further incident. He now faces multiple charges, including illegal possession of an assault weapon and large-capacity magazine, criminal possession of a firearm, and possession of narcotics with intent to sell. Bond was set at $500,000.
Police officials say the case highlights the ongoing intersection of illegal firearms and drug trafficking — and how quickly a routine traffic call can turn into a far more serious investigation.
