A recent study from the University of São Paulo suggests that cannabidiol (CBD), a non-intoxicating compound derived from the cannabis plant, may alleviate certain symptoms associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children and adolescents. The research indicates that CBD could enhance social responsiveness, reduce disruptive behaviors, and alleviate anxiety among young individuals with ASD.
The study involved a meta-analysis of three clinical trials with a total of 276 participants aged 5 to 21, approximately 78% of whom were male. The findings suggest that CBD extract improved social interactions, decreased disruptive behaviors, lessened anxiety, and enhanced sleep quality. Importantly, these benefits were observed without significant adverse effects when compared to a placebo.
Despite these promising results, the researchers emphasize the necessity for larger, more comprehensive studies to fully understand CBD’s safety and efficacy in treating ASD symptoms. The limited sample size and number of studies highlight the need for further research before CBD can be widely recommended as a treatment option for ASD.
Experts, including Professor Geert Dom, president of the European Psychiatric Association, expressed optimism regarding these findings, underscoring the importance of continued investigation into CBD’s therapeutic potential for individuals with ASD.
