As a former Congressman representing parts of Miami-Dade, I have had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the resilience and adaptability of our great state.
Today, I stand in support of Amendment 3 to legalize the recreational use of marijuana for adults, which will be on the ballot this November. For the sake of transparency, I am a paid advisor to Smart and Safe Florida, an organization promoting the passage of Amendment 3.
This measure is not just a step forward but a necessary one for the well-being of our communities.
One of the most compelling reasons to support Amendment 3 is the growing body of research that suggests marijuana acts as an exit substance, not a gateway drug.
Contrary to outdated beliefs, numerous studies have shown that marijuana can help individuals reduce their dependence on more harmful substances, including prescription opioids.
In states where marijuana has been legalized, there has been a noticeable decline in non-medical opioid use. This is a critical consideration as we continue to grapple with the devastating opioid crisis.
Moreover, concerns about increased teen use have proven to be unfounded. Research indicates that in states where marijuana is legal, teen use rates have actually declined.
This is likely due to the stringent regulations and safeguards that come with legalization, making it more difficult for underage individuals to access marijuana.
Legalization allows for better control and oversight, ensuring that marijuana is sold responsibly and kept out of the hands of minors.
In addition to these benefits, legalizing marijuana will ensure that the products available to consumers are safe and lab-tested. The illicit marijuana market is fraught with risks, including instances of marijuana being laced with fentanyl.
By bringing marijuana into a regulated market, we can guarantee that consumers have access to products that meet strict safety standards, thereby reducing the potential for harm.
And we cannot deny the incredible projections of new tax revenue Amendment 3 will bring to Florida.
Estimates suggest that the legalization of recreational marijuana could generate up to $431 million annually in new tax revenue. This influx of funds could be directed toward essential public services such as education, healthcare and infrastructure.
Imagine the positive impact on our schools, hospitals and roads with this additional revenue stream.
It’s an opportunity to invest in our future and improve the quality of life for all Floridians. While Americans in 24 states and D.C. have the freedom to purchase and consume marijuana, Floridians still don’t have that same right.
We have fewer individual freedoms and we are passing up millions in tax revenue, tourism dollars and market growth that will create new jobs right here in Florida.
Amendment 3 is not just about legalizing marijuana; it’s about adopting a sensible, evidence-based approach to drug policy.
It’s about reducing harm, supporting public health and ensuring that our laws reflect the realities of modern science and society.
I urge my fellow Floridians to vote in favor of Amendment 3 this November.
Together, we can take a significant step toward a safer, healthier, and more just Florida.
