Connecticut are you ready to stop playing political games?
In regards to cannabis legalization, the time for action is now. For too long, advocates and residents alike, sought out and attempted to educate the legislators in Hartford. Cannabis is not the devil plant Harry Anslinger would have liked you all to believe. The war on drugs was only successful in tearing families apart, overpopulating our prisons, profiling and targeting people of color, and let’s not forget it’s use as a political tool to revoke the right to free-speech, just to name a few.
End the Fear Mongering
In this day and age, we have access to more knowledge and information than ever before. We can argue that not all of the available information is factual, but with a little effort it is easy to navigate through the false narratives. People who use cannabis are not lazy, dumb, nor necessarily low-income as some people would like you to believe . The facts are out there and they are supported by credible sources. Stating we, as a state, need more information to make a decision should no longer be an acceptable response from our representatives. You had your time for discovery already, this chapter needs to come to an end. Need we remind you, actions speak louder than words.
The mere existence of a successful medical program should be enough to discredit the prohibition propaganda. Cannabis does have medical benefits. It is not a gateway to harder drugs. Drug testing does not prove impairment or that the consumer is a bad or untrustworthy individual. Not all cannabis gets the consumer “high.” Children will not be put in anymore danger by legalizing cannabis. Regulation and keeping cannabis mainstream will minimize risks. By not talking about cannabis, does not keep it out of the hands of minors. Education and responsiblity is the best course of action with legalization.
The Right To Choose
Adults should have the ability to choice cannabis, just like we all have the right to choose to have an alcoholic beverage or consume nicotine responsibly. There are worse known issues with alcohol and nicotine than with cannabis, but both are completely legal and heavily promoted everywhere you look.
The polls are out, the informational studies are available, educators continue to reach out. Enough is enough, cannabis should be legal. Prohibition needs to end! The time to make the decision to legalize adult consumption is now. As an activist, it is tiring to continuously beat the drum for people who are too naive to listen or unwilling to make a stand for what is the right thing to do morally. Where are the ethical values in Hartford? We should all demand a high caliber of ethical and moral integrity from our representatives and senators.
The time for playing political games are over. We do not need further discussions, we need action. Connecticut residents are hurting. The state is in financial disarray and the state’s inability to be fiscally or morally responsible is driving residents to other states to call home. I grew up in Connecticut. I love Connecticut. I want to be proud to be from Connecticut once again.
Bill No 5458
Tomorrow we need to see action from the General Law Committee. The scheduled hearing at 10am in the Capitol will be to discuss Bill No 5458.
Raised Bill No 5458 AN ACT CONCERNING THE REGULATION OF THE RETAIL SALE OF MARIJUANA
-Legalizes personal possession of up to 1 ounce of marijuana for individuals 21+.
-Allows individuals the right to grow up to 6 plants on their own property for individual use, limit 12 plants per household.
-Establishes a Marijuana Control Commission, which will issue a select number of licenses to marijuana lounges and retailers
This proposed bill is the start we need. This is the standard set of regulations used throughout the Northeast when addressing cannabis legalization. Connecticut residents are not demanding outrageous rights. The ball is now in the hands of the legislators, we will see who the true leaders are in the state. I hope to see many of you tomorrow in support of legalization.
