Is Representative Candelora an Enemy to Prosperity?
Last week at the State Capitol there was a concerning forum presented by Republican Representative Vin Candelora. It was with a heavy heart that I was not able to attend in person. As I was sitting on the train into New York City, I received an unexpected call from someone in attendance. As the forum was about to begin, it was sad to hear the terrible fear mongering display of misinformation presented by the representative.
Instead of reading the false claims himself, the representative brought adolescence into the room to do the talking for him. In attempts to scare residents on the topic, Candelora leveraged a group of emotional teens to deliver his agenda. I couldn’t help but remember the days when I was child learning and participating in D.A.R.E events, because that was the “right” thing to do. Ironically, I was introduced to things I previously had no idea existed. Fast forward and here we are today advocating for the reversal of cannabis prohibition. It took a world of severe anguish to have my eyes opened to the fact, cannabis was not and is not the danger I was misled to believe.
Not A Gateway
This plant is not the cure all for everything medical, but it is definitely not the gateway to anything either. It has helped more people kick opiate addition than I can count. To hear the claim that 10,000 people in Connecticut are addicted to marijuana was interesting to say the least. It was the first red flag that these so called facts could all be made up.

What are the Risks?
The claims made in this report from SAM, Smart Approaches to Marijuana, are actually not based on any proven causality. They are loosely associated in every facet, starting but not ending with Drugged-Driving Fatalities/Injuries. The claims here state that blood samples were taken to prove causality. A major flaw with this claim is how the information was collected. How can you tell if the driver was impaired? Blood and Urine testing for cannabis are based on a metabolized derivative of THC, not the molecule itself. Do you think it’s a coincidence, that on average, cannabis can be detected for 30 days, but impairment can last less than a few hours? THC or or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the chemical compound in cannabis responsible for a euphoric high. There is no test available in this day and age that can legally test for the impairment of THC.
How many irrefutable deaths are related directly to cannabis? Zero!
Explosions?
The claim of increase explosions are not based on factual data either. We are trying to bring the plant into the legal realm and remove the criminal activity. Manufacturing should be performed in a safe setting with the proper equipment. Since marijuana was legalized, how many legal manufacturing facilities experienced explosions? This was not answered by the report. Lawmakers need to stop skewing statistics so they fit the desired agenda. If anything, illegal activity should be the reason to push for legal regulations. How many explosions have we had at growing facilities in Connecticut since the medical program began? Zero, that’s how many.
Let’s not even start on the claim, cannabis is related to the increase in homelessness. My head started to throb here due to the ignorance. If anything the industry will create jobs, not only in the production and retail sale, but in ancillary support industries as well. Not all of the jobs to be created will be minimum wage based either. Only time will tell how impactful cannabis can be on our economy.
It was amazing to see the attached names associated to the board, because it was not hard to see that these individuals stand to loose a lot with legalization passing. This report clearly lost validity to me when I started to identify the cited sources… Cosmo really? Please tell me how Cosmo is a creditable source.
The real danger is not cannabis or it’s consumers, but people like Representative Vincent Candelora who blindly state false narratives without repercussions. Just think, if he can lie here, what else is lying about?
