New Orleans has never been famous for moderation — but tucked above the brass-thumping chaos of Frenchmen Street, something downright revolutionary is happening: people are going out sober… and actually loving it.
Up a staircase inside Bamboula’s, past the swirl of saxophones and spilled hurricanes, sits Mélange by Cali Sober — the city’s first non-alcoholic, THC-forward cocktail lounge. It’s part speakeasy, part wellness experiment, and part “Wait… am I high or just relaxed?”
Mélange is the creation of Monica Olano, the self-proclaimed “Cali Sober Mom,” a content creator turned zero-proof evangelist who built a following by blending mom-life with cannabinoid chic. After launching her Cali Sober Market — a boutique of booze-free drinks, adaptogens, and hemp elixirs — she realized New Orleans needed more than a place to buy botanical beverages. It needed a place to drink them, socialize with them, and feel included doing it.
And that’s exactly what Mélange delivers.
Inside, it looks like any stylish cocktail bar: dim lights, fancy glassware, bartenders who take citrus more seriously than their rent. But the alcohol? Gone. Instead, patrons sip layered, complex drinks that calm, uplift, or energize without the booze-fueled chaos that typically defines the city’s nightlife.
For the adventurous, THC beverages provide a gentle lift — enough to make the jazz sound even better, without turning Frenchmen Street into your personal Burning Man.
The whole vibe is strangely serene for a room sitting directly above a place where people lose flip-flops nightly. Step onto the balcony, and you can watch the mayhem below like a wildlife documentary. It’s nightlife, but with hydration.
But Mélange isn’t just a stylish hangout — it’s a statement. At a time when federal lawmakers are debating the future of hemp-derived products, Olano sees the writing on the wall. She’s vocal about the risk of new regulations pushing small producers aside while giant alcohol companies swoop in to dominate the space.
For now, though, Mélange is thriving — a little oasis of clarity in a city famous for chaos. Downstairs, the daiquiris are flowing. Upstairs, the THC spritzes are sparkling. And somehow, both worlds coexist.
It’s New Orleans, after all. The only rule is: do your thing.
And Mélange? It’s doing its thing — without the hangover.
