VERNON, CT — A routine traffic stop in Vernon late Friday night escalated into a dramatic scene involving a medical emergency and an attempted escape, ultimately resulting in the arrest of two individuals on drug-related charges.
According to Vernon police, officers observed a vehicle traveling erratically along Route 83 around 10:15 p.m. The car was stopped, and the occupants were identified as Nahzai Watkins, 22, of Vernon, and Masai Johnson, 22, of Windsor.
During the stop, officers noted visible marijuana residue on the driver’s lap, prompting further investigation. As per Connecticut law, operating a vehicle under the influence of marijuana is strictly prohibited, and a field sobriety test was initiated.
While officers conducted the roadside evaluation, the passenger began experiencing a medical emergency. Officers immediately shifted focus to provide assistance, removing the passenger from the vehicle.
In an unexpected turn, the driver reportedly took advantage of the distraction, sprinting back to the vehicle and attempting to flee by climbing into the driver’s seat. Police intervened quickly and successfully stopped the escape attempt before the vehicle could be moved.
Both individuals were taken into custody and now face multiple charges stemming from the incident. Vernon police emphasized the ongoing risks associated with impaired driving and reminded the public of the serious legal consequences of attempting to flee law enforcement.
