A house fire in Webster on Friday morning was caused by an overloaded power strip in an illegal marijuana grow room, according to State Fire Marshal Jon Davine’s office.
Investigators found that the fire began in a second-floor room, which was filled with multiple cannabis plants. A power strip powered lights, fans and other electrical devices, Davine’s office said in a statement.
Smoke and flames were coming from the two-story duplex home at 57 N. Main St. when firefighters arrived at 10:05 a.m., the statement said.

The fire was put out in about 10 minutes and the flames were contained to the second floor, according to the statement.
Eight residents from two families were displaced by the fire. One resident was taken to a hospital for observation, the statement said.
Hundreds of cannabis plants, pesticides, fertilizers, and other illicit drugs were discovered by firefighters on the scene, the statement said.
Firefighters requested members of the State Police Bomb Squad and Department of Fire Services’ Joint Hazard Incident Response Team to assess and help mitigate the hazards, according to the statement.
