Connecticut State Police said they recovered thousands of dollars in cash and about 11 pounds of marijuana during a traffic stop on Interstate 91 in Middletown early Thursday.
An Ohio driver is facing charges after Connecticut State Police stopped his Jeep on Interstate 91 in Middletown and found 11 pounds of marijuana and thousands of dollars in cash, according to police.
Kareem Ali Ford, 51, of Columbus, Ohio, is charged with possession with intent to sell a controlled substance, possession with intent to sell one kilogram or more of cannabis and illegal possession of a controlled substance, state police said. He also is charged with operating a motor vehicle without carrying an operator’s license and failure to display lighted lamps on a motor vehicle.
Ford was held in lieu of $100,000 bail and was due to appear for arraignment at state Superior Court in Middletown Thursday, the agency said.
Around 12:45 a.m. Thursday, a trooper out of Hartford on patrol spotted Ford’s Jeep driving in the right lane of southbound I-91 without its taillights on, state police said in a news release.
The trooper pulled over the car, a silver Jeep Compass, just before Exit 19, state police said.
The trooper approached the driver, identified as Ford, and learned the car Ford was driving was a rental.
“During the Trooper’s on-scene investigation, Ford admitted to carrying several pounds of cannabis inside of his vehicle,” state police said.
Another trooper was called to the scene to assist, and a search of the Jeep ultimately led police to seize about 11 pounds of marijuana and $5,501 in cash, according to police. State police said the cash and drugs were hidden “in duffel bags and backpacks in various sections of the vehicle.”
Ford told police he is not a licensed marijuana distributor and did not have a medical marijuana card.
