SHELTON — City officials are moving to prevent the sale of cannabis in the city even as a large cannabis farm pushes to open its first retail store in Shelton.
The Board of Aldermen will discuss a proposed ordinance prohibiting all types of cannabis establishments and retail sales of cannabis or cannabis-related products during its meeting Thursday. Mayor Mark Lauretti is pushing for the ban.
“We do not need this here,” Lauretti said about cannabis shops.
The Planning and Zoning Commission, at its meeting last month, deadlocked, 3-3, on a motion to prohibit such establishments in Shelton. The deadlock means the motion failed, allowing applications to be filed starting April 1.
Lauretti said he was “caught by surprise” by the commission’s deadlock.
“We deal with manufacturing and job creation here,” Lauretti said. “We are at a point where we can be selective about the businesses we want here. We do not need marijuana.”
