Seattle, Washington-based retail and logistics giant Amazon endorsed several pieces of legislation making their way through Congress that would reform the federal governmentâs stance on cannabis. Amazon endorsed both the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act (MORE Act) and the Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act (CAOA). That is, Amazon has signed on to both of the plans put forward by Democrats in recent years, the former sponsored by Jerry Nadler and the latter by Chuck Schumer. Additionally, Amazon endorsed the States Reform Act, a Republican-backed plan focused on returning full decisive power on the issue to the states.
The endorsements follow the announcement two years ago that the company would remove cannabis from its pre-employment drug screening program for all positions not regulated by the Department of Transportation. âWe made these changes for a few reasons,â Amazon wrote recently. âFirst, we recognized that an increasing number of states are moving to some level of cannabis legalizationâmaking it difficult to implement an equitable, consistent, and national pre-employment marijuana testing program. Second, publicly available national data indicates that pre-employment marijuana testing disproportionately impacts people of color and acts as a barrier to employment. And third, Amazonâs pace of growth means that we are always looking to hire great new team members, and weâve found that eliminating pre-employment testing for cannabis allows us to expand our applicant pool.
âWe are enthused by the notable momentum in the country toward recognizing that todayâs status quo is unfair and untenable,â the company added. âWe look forward to working with Congress and other supporters to secure necessary reform of the nationâs cannabis laws.ââDanny Sullivan
