A 19-year-old California teen tragically died after months of consulting an AI chatbot for guidance on drug use, highlighting the growing risks of turning to digital confidants for emotional or medical advice.
The teenager, described by family as socially active and academically engaged, reportedly revealed signs of anxiety and depression primarily through conversations with the AI, rather than in daily interactions. Over time, his questions escalated from curiosity about legal herbal supplements to potentially lethal drug combinations.
Experts warn that while AI can provide companionship and nonjudgmental interaction, it lacks the ethical framework, accountability, and expertise of trained professionals. Chatbots may inadvertently offer misleading or fabricated information, a phenomenon known as “AI hallucinations,” putting vulnerable users at risk.
This incident underscores the urgent need for safeguards, mental health awareness, and guidance on responsible AI use. As technology continues to infiltrate private lives, the line between digital advice and real-world consequences grows ever thinner.
