Is Springfield looking to open up shop? The city has historically been opposed to cannabis businesses and was known to shutdown any activity within the city limits.

SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield City Council has voted unanimously to impose a local 3% tax on marijuana sales, the maximum allowed under state law. The tax would be added to the city’s regular sales tax.
The revenue generated from the marijuana tax would be split — half going toward funding police and fire pensions, and the other half to fund economic development projects on the city’s east side.
“I think this is a great opportunity for the city of Springfield and this city council to be a leader and a role model for other municipalities in how they implement this new law and I believe that this ordinance significantly embodies the spirit in which that law was passed,” said Ward 3 Ald. Doris Turner on Tuesday.
