A new marijuana dispensary has opened in Connecticut. It’s one of two that will eventually be in Milford.
One of which was met with a great deal of controversy. This latest location on New Haven Avenue opened just last week. And that brings the total number of marijuana dispensaries in our state to eight. In a week’s time, the dispensary has seen 70 patients.
“The stories they are telling us, how much this medication has helped them. It gets them to do thing they weren’t able to do on a daily basis,” said Raj Patel, manager of Southern Connecticut Wellness and Healing LLC.
Milford has been a major focus when it comes to medical marijuana. The Department of Consumer Protection tells News 8 that of the 17 applications that have been submitted, nine of them were in Milford.
There’s another location on West River Street that will open sometime in the fall. You may recall many residents spoke out about that location. They’re not happy about it because it’s in a residential area.
The Department of Consumer Protection tells News 8 there’s a big need in Milford and Connecticut in general. When this program started back in 2014 there were about 1,600 patients. There are now more than 12,000.
“So the program is progressing which is good because it’s providing another alternative for people suffering from a limited number but very serious conditions whether it’s cancer, AIDS, ALS, those are serious disease,” said Jonathan Harris, Commissioner of Consumer Protection.
Commissioner Harris says that all dispensaries go through a highly regulated process. The department looks at all aspects of the facility, from the business model, personnel, backgrounds and security.
Another dispensary opened a few weeks ago in Waterbury. Some of the other locations include Hartford, Bristol, Uncasville, Branford, Bethel and South Windsor.
