A pioneering study conducted by researchers at the University of Otago in New Zealand has unveiled that while both cannabis and tobacco consumption detrimentally impact lung health, they do so in markedly different ways. This finding carries growing importance as global trends show increasing acceptance and use of cannabis.
Key Findings on Lung Function
Led by Professor Bob Hancox, the research presents compelling evidence that long-term cannabis use may result in lungs that are overly inflated and exhibit heightened airflow resistance—outcomes that surpass those seen in tobacco smokers. Additionally, contrary to earlier beliefs, cannabis seems to impair the lungs’ capacity to absorb oxygen—an effect previously thought to be exclusive to tobacco exposure.
Groundbreaking Methodology: A Lifetime of Data
The results stem from the esteemed Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study, which tracked more than a thousand individuals born in Dunedin in 1972 and 1973. The study’s participants have been monitored up to the age of 45, making this one of the most comprehensive examinations of long-term cannabis exposure and its implications for lung function. Roughly 75% of the individuals had consumed cannabis at least once during their lifetimes.
“Bong Lung” and Broader Implications
Clinicians have identified a severe form of emphysema—nicknamed “bong lung”—in heavy cannabis users. The new data suggest that the specific lung impairments observed may represent early-stage indicators of this condition. While previous research has already indicated that cannabis and tobacco inflict different types of lung damage, this study reinforces that divergence through robust longitudinal data.
The researchers also caution that dual use of cannabis and tobacco may expose individuals to the aggregated harms of both substances. The physiological mechanisms behind the distinct effects remain unclear, highlighting a critical need for deeper exploration.
