A cannabis strain has made horticultural history by winning a top public award at one of Europe’s most prestigious garden exhibitions, beating out traditional favorites like roses, tulips, and other ornamental staples.
The victory took place at IPM Essen, Germany’s leading international horticulture trade fair, where attendees voted on the most impressive new plant on display. For the first time ever, a cannabis cultivar was entered into the competition—and it walked away with the public’s choice award.
The winning strain, BCN Critical XXL Autoflower, was developed by Spanish seed company Seedstockers. Known for its resilience and ease of cultivation, the plant resonated with voters from across the horticultural industry, many of whom had little prior experience with cannabis. It ultimately outperformed more than 40 competing plant entries from dozens of exhibitors.
The result is being widely viewed as a sign of cannabis’s growing acceptance beyond niche markets. Once excluded from mainstream plant showcases, cannabis is now being judged—and celebrated—on its botanical merits alongside the world’s most established garden varieties.
In a space long dominated by roses, this win suggests that cannabis has officially earned its place in the flower bed. 🌱
