In what can only be described as a hilariously unconventional approach to golf, the inaugural Las Vegas Vlasic Classic teed off at the Paiute Golf Resort on November 8, marking the United States’ first fully legal cannabis consumption golf tournament. This novel event blended sport, advocacy, and cannabis culture, creating a relaxed atmosphere where participants could puff and putt without running afoul of state regulations.
The tournament, an expansion of the Midwest-based series, drew golfers, cannabis operators, advocates, and brand representatives for a day of networking, competition, and casual conversation. On the course, players were free to sample products and interact with sponsors in a way typical events only dream of. The relaxed pace seemed to suit everyone, though one can’t help but wonder: were they all hitting the ball in the right direction?
Beyond the novelty, the event had a serious purpose. Over $17,500 was raised for organizations focused on cannabis justice and re-entry programs, including Freedom Grow Forever, the Last Prisoner Project, and The Weldon Project. Funds were earmarked for legal advocacy, clemency initiatives, and support for those affected by cannabis-related incarceration.
Founder Willy Vlasic noted that Las Vegas was a strategic choice, representing both a major cannabis market and an opportunity to showcase a compliant, well-organized tournament. Partnering with the Paiute Tribe and NuWu Cannabis allowed for on-site consumption, making the event a rare and fully integrated experience for participants.
The Las Vegas Vlasic Classic may have been a bit unconventional, but it proved that golf and cannabis culture can intersect in a meaningful, entertaining, and surprisingly productive way. And as players navigated the greens with a little extra buzz, one thing was clear: this was one tournament nobody would soon forget.
