Today is the first day of summer.
Not unofficial summer. Not “it felt like summer since Memorial Day” summer. Real summer. The solstice. The longest day of the year. More sunlight than we’ll get on any other day. And honestly? That feels worth noticing.
We live in a culture that treats every day like it’s an emergency. Notifications. Deadlines. Group texts. Emails. News alerts screaming about something new every six minutes. Everybody’s rushing somewhere, even if they don’t know where they’re going. But summer doesn’t move like that.
Summer has its own rhythm. Summer says sit outside a little longer. Summer says take your shoes off. Summer says watch the light change in the trees. Summer says maybe that thing can wait until tomorrow.
Today feels like a good day to remember that life isn’t supposed to be all grind and no breath. So here’s my humble recommendation for the first day of summer:
Slow down.
Step outside.
Feel the heat.
Listen to the birds.
Look at the sky like you used to when you were a kid and time moved slower.
And if weed is part of your ritual—roll something nice.
Not a rushed smoke while checking your phone. Not a distracted hit between chores. I’m talking about a proper joint.
Roll it with intention. Spark it slowly. Take that first inhale and actually notice it. Exhale like you’re letting go of some weight you didn’t realize you were carrying. Maybe today isn’t about getting more done. Maybe today is about remembering how to be still.
Sit on the porch. Sit in the yard. Sit in a lawn chair that’s seen better days. Let the sun hit your face. Let the breeze do its thing. Smoke a joint and allow yourself to relax without feeling guilty about it.
That’s the real trick, isn’t it? Not just slowing down, but slowing down without immediately feeling like you should be doing something productive.
Summer has a funny way of reminding us that joy doesn’t need to be earned. Sometimes joy is simple.
A lighter flicking, a cherry glowing, fresh cut grass, music drifting from somewhere down the street, and that first deep breath when your shoulders finally drop. That’s enough. So on this first day of summer, give yourself permission to ease up.
The world will keep spinning. The emails will still be there. The chaos will still be waiting tomorrow. But today? Today belongs to sunlight, stillness, and maybe a really good joint.
Happy first day of summer.
Keep it weird,
